I have to say, I’ve never seen a room so full of happy, excited, and simpatico people as at Heidi Swanson’s book signing at the Ace Hotel in Portland. I watched as complete strangers struck up conversation, either in line to have their book signed or on the way to the bar or food table: “Heidi’s book changed the way I cook.” “I had never heard of harissa, but now I use it in everything!” “My kids are such picky eaters, but now my five-year-old asks for Quinoa Patties by name!”

Our last profile showcases What I Eat (Material World, distributed by Ten Speed Press, August 2010) by Faith D’Aluisio and Peter Menzel. What I Eat is nominated for both a 2011 James Beard Foundation Book Award in the Reference & Scholarship category and an IACP Award in the Food Matters category. The Recipe Club was lucky enough to chat with Faith about her and Peter’s latest book, What I Eat, which is a truly amazing photographic collection featuring profiles of 80 people from 30 countries around the world and the food they eat in one day.

Maria Speck grew up in Greece and Germany before moving to the United States as a young adult. She is a writer and journalist who has contributed to Gourmet, Saveur, Gastronomica, Marie Claire and Elle. Her popular cooking classes in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focus on the flavors and cooking styles of the Mediterranean and on creating innovative and delicious meals with whole grains. Below Maria transports us to her beloved Greece as she answers a few questions and shares a recommended recipe from her first cookbook, Ancient Grains for Modern Meals (Ten Speed Press, April 2011).
